ACM Accolades Continue for School of IC Faculty
School of Interactive Computing Chair and Professor Shaowen Bardzell and Professor Munmun De Choudhury have been named Distinguished Members of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM).
The ACM recognized 61 new members in 2025. According to the ACM’s website, Distinguished Members represent the top 10% of the ACM’s global membership, recognized for their technical achievements and service.
The Distinguished Members represent numerous research areas, including healthcare AI, computing education, data management, human-computer interaction (HCI), mobile computing, networked systems, security, software, and sustainability.
“We see the annual announcement of a new class of Distinguished Members as one of our most important events and an excellent way to cap off the year,” said ACM President Yannis Ioannidis. “It’s our opportunity to recognize computing innovators whose efforts and creativity underpin the technologies that shape our world.
“In many ways, becoming an ACM Distinguished Member is only a milestone towards greater achievements. We’re excited to see how these leaders will continue to shape our increasingly digital society.”
Distinguished Members are nominated by their peers for acceptance.
“I’m humbled, grateful, and honored that my colleagues and some of the top minds in the field have recognized the work I’ve been doing over many years, with the help of so many of my students and research collaborators,” De Choudhury said.
De Choudhury, who joined Georgia Tech in 2014, is a globally recognized researcher on mental health and its relationship to online communities, including social media.
“It was the start of a new research direction,” she said. “The work informs us from an HCI perspective how the design of these systems shapes our mental health. It also helps us better refine these systems to help people and have positive impacts.”
Bardzell has spent her career advancing feminist HCI, social justice, women’s health, and ecological and environmental justice through critical computing.
“I have amazing colleagues and mentors at Georgia Tech and beyond, and I’m very fortunate to have worked with a series of outstanding students,” Bardzell said. “The honor belongs to all of them.”
This is the third honor Bardzell and De Choudhury have received from the ACM in as many years. In 2023, they shared the ACM’s Special Interest Group on Computer-Human Interaction (SIGCHI) Societal Impact Award.
In 2024, they were inducted into the SIGCHI Academy, an honorary group of leaders who have made substantial and innovative contributions to HCI research.
