CSE Spring 2025 Commencement

Journey to Make a Difference Continues for Class of 2025

Graduates from the School of Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) were among the 6,600 new Georgia Tech alumni who received their diplomas at Commencement ceremonies held May 1-3.

While the path toward completing these interdisciplinary degrees was long and winding, the voyage weathered CSE graduates into stalwart leaders ready to solve difficult problems facing science and engineering.

“At the end of your journeys, what will make you proud, and what will make your family and all of us proud, is what you did to lift others up and to make a difference in our world,” said Georgia Tech President Ángel Cabrera in his commencement address to Ph.D. graduates.

“No pressure. As we like to say around here, we can do that. I know you are ready to tackle any challenge that might come your way.”

Along with administering its flagship CSE Ph.D. and M.S. CSE programs, the School of CSE offers doctoral degrees in computer science and machine learning. Ph.D. graduates who received their diplomas and doctoral hoods on May 1 at McCamish Pavilion included:

  • Michael Buzzy (Ph.D. CSE-MSE 2025), advised by Regents’ Professor Surya Kalidindi, who is jointly appointed with the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering (ME), the School of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), and the School of CSE
  • Dongjin Choi (Ph.D. CSE-CSE 2025), advised by School of CSE Regents’ Professor and Chair Haesun Park
  • Yinghao Li (Ph.D. ML-CSE 2025), co-advised by School of CSE Assistant Professor Chao Zhang and School of MSE Professor Rampi Ramprasad
  • Md Abdul Rahaman (Ph.D. CSE-CSE 2025), advised by Vince Calhoun, distinguished university professor with Georgia Tech, Georgia State University, and Emory University
  • Gaurav Verma (Ph.D. CS-CSE 2025), advised by School of CSE Assistant Professor Srijan Kumar
  • Austin Wright (Ph.D. ML-CSE 2025), advised by School of CSE Professor Polo Chau
  • Qingru Zhang (Ph.D. ML-CSE 2025), co-advised by Assistant Professor Chao Zhang and Tuo Zhao, associate professor with the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISyE)
  • Rongzhi Zhang (Ph.D. ML-CSE 2025), advised by Assistant Professor Chao Zhang

Three CSE Ph.D. students completed M.S. degrees this spring and will continue their studies at Georgia Tech. They are:

  • Srikanth Avasarala (M.S. CSE-CSE 2025), advised by Professor Felix Herrmann, who is jointly appointed with the schools of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, Electrical and Computer Engineering, and CSE
  • Grant Bruer (M.S. CSE-CSE 2025), advised by Professor Felix Herrmann
  • Honglai (Matthew) Peng (M.S. CSE-CEE 2025), advised by School of Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor J. David Frost

Georgia Tech’s CSE graduate program includes 12 schools and departments participating as home units. These home units represent the colleges of Computing, Engineering, and Science. This approach facilitates an immersive, interdisciplinary experience for students to study computational approaches within domain fields.

Georgia Tech jointly celebrated master’s graduates at a ceremony on May 3 at Bobby Dodd Stadium. After the Institute celebration, graduates were recognized during ceremonies held by their respective colleges.
