Veteran Georgia Tech Computer Science Professor Named as School Chair

Professor Hyesoon Kim has been named the new chair of Georgia Tech’s School of Computer Science (SCS). She assumed the role on Aug. 1.  

Kim has been an SCS faculty member for nearly 20 years. Her career at Georgia Tech began in 2007, after earning her Ph.D. in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of Texas at Austin. She has served as associate chair of SCS since 2022. She is also co-director of the Center for Research into Novel Computing Hierarchies (CRNCH) and leads the HPArch research group.  

One of Kim’s main focuses is determining the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in the School’s future and how it will be leveraged to teach students and streamline administrative processes. 

“I’d like to create those kinds of discussions and foster an environment to engage with faculty members, staff, and students on this topic," she said.  

Kim is an acclaimed researcher whose interests span computer architecture, compilers, and runtime systems. She recently began focusing on open-source GPU technologies for next-generation computing. She is an IEEE Fellow and a Hall of Fame member of the International Symposium on High-Performance Computer Architecture (HPCA) and the International Symposium on Microarchitecture (MICRO). 

Regents’ Professor Mostafa Ammar has served as interim chair since 2024, when former chair Vivek Sarkar became the dean of the College of Computing.
