Data Visualization Researcher Receives Alumni Award from Virginia Tech

A data visualization researcher in the School of Interactive Computing has been recognized as a distinguished alumnus by his alma mater.

Associate Professor Alex Endert received the 2025 Distinguished Early Career Alumni Award from Virginia Tech. 

Endert earned his Ph.D. in computer science from Virginia Tech in 2012. His dissertation earned him the Virginia Tech Computer Science Best Dissertation Award in 2013 along with the IEEE VGTC VPG Pioneers Group Doctoral Dissertation Award.

Virginia Tech’s Distinguished Early Career Alumni Award honors the research achievements and contributions among alumni who have a conferred computer science degree from the past 15 years.

Endert came to Georgia Tech as an assistant professor in 2014 and was promoted to associate professor in 2020. He directs Georgia Tech’s Visual Analytics Lab and serves as Associate Chair of Operations and Special Initiatives for the School of Interactive Computing.

Since 2015, he’s been a member of the Science Advisory Guide for Emergencies for the Department of Homeland Security and Technology Directorate. In 2013, he was named Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s National Science Directorate Author of the Year.

Endert serves on the executive committee and is the assistant director for broader impacts of the National AI Institute for Adult Learning and Online Education (AI-ALOE). AI-ALOE is one of three national AI institutes housed and led by Georgia Tech.
