I would like to explore the role that AI can play in scaling a K-5 classroom teacher's ability to provide their students with personal and responsive lessons in the foundational reading, writing, and math skills that are so necessary for academic and societal success. This is in response to the overwhelming student-teacher ratios that exists in many schools. This problem is coupled with the lack of funding for paraprofessional help, and further exacerbated by the financial incentive that schools have to promote students even though they lack these skills.
I would also like to explore next generation auto graders that go beyond comparing students responses to correct answers and returning all-or-nothing scores. An upgraded system would be able to grade via a rubric and apply partial credit according to the nuances of a student's answer. Furthermore, it would be very helpful if the system could evaluate the performance of the student based on the intended learning objectives tested in an assessment.
On all levels from elementary school to senior citizens, people have a need to add the tools of computing to their creative and problem solving arsenals. My teaching interests are in introducing these individuals to computing via creative expressions and physical interactions. The intent is that their computing identity will expand and their comfort with these tools will be increased.
